What is Opti-C ?

Opti-C is an innovative mix of Astaxanthin and Phosphatidylserine (PS) from non-GMO soybean in Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO). It is a plant-based oil which gives protection to the brain, eyes and general health of the body.

The brain is an energy-intensive organ, using around 20% of the body’s calories, so it needs plenty of good fuel to maintain concentration throughout the day. The brain also requires nutrients to stay healthy, to help build and repair brain cells, as well as antioxidants to reduce cellular stress and inflammation, which are linked to brain aging and neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease.

Alzheimer is one of the common cause of dementia. According to the Alzheimer Disease International report, with a total population of 32 million, the prevalence of dementia in Malaysia is projected to increase from 0.126% in 2020 to 0.454% in 2050, respectively 1. Supplements catering for healthy aging, particularly brain health, is on the rise to address age-related cognitive decline.

Opti-C contains natural brain food that benefits cognitive health and mood of all ages. This formula is based upon scientific findings on the protective and curative role of active ingredients of Opti-C on human brain against neuro-inflammation, oxidative stress and neurodegenerative disorders.

Astaxanthin, the new perspective to brain health

Increase oxidative stress in the brain has been found to be responsible for many neurodegenerative disorders like Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis and much more.

There have been protective effects seen in the disease when treated with astaxanthin, which might potentially prevent or slow down the development of symptoms. Expert believe that the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of astaxanthin play a role in the protection of mitochondria and nerve cell. In saying that, they seem to suggest that the antioxidant is a potential treatment for neurodegenerative disorders.

In a 2010 study, scientists were thrilled to discover that antioxidant of astaxanthin can be instrumental in reducing the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, especially in the early onset type. When combined with lifestyle changes, studies have shown that astaxanthin can be effective at preventing and decelerating its progression 2, 3.

Another human clinical studies done by Nakagawa et al. showed that astaxanthin improved red blood cell antioxidant status and decreased intracellular phospholipid hydroperoxide (oxidants) accumulation levels, which may contribute to the prevention of dementia 4

Astaxanthin support emotional resilience and well-being

Most of us experience an intensive demand in life, work life imbalance, family issue, relationship and more. These often leads to stress, anxiety and general low mood which can have a profound impact on quality of life and health. In the face of this challenge and in order to achieve psychological balance, we need to boost our emotional resilience. This can be done via promoting habits such as physical activity, good sleep and connecting to others.

There is often a link between oxidative stress, the brain, mental and health fatigue and emotional well-being. Human clinical studies has shown that natural astaxanthin potentially support emotional well-being and cognitive health by creating a balance between free radicals and antioxidant.

In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, individuals were treated with AstaReal astaxathin for 8 weeks. Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) analysis showed that AstaReal astaxanthin significantly reduced perceived symptom of mental and physical fatigue compared to the placebo. These includes improvements in clarity of thinking, concentration, motivation and mood. Irritation and feeling of body heaviness were reduced. Supplementation with astaxanthin also significantly reduced salivary cortisol, a biomarker for stress 5,6.

Shawn Talbott (2019) suggested that natural astaxanthin supplementation reduces negative mood state parameter (depression and fatigue) and improves global mood state and thus supports mental wellness 7.

Virgin coconut oil (VCO)

Virgin coconut oil (VCO) helps to enhance the absorption of astaxanthin in the body which allows effective delivery.

VCO is extracted from fresh coconut flesh at low temperature and without the use of chemical. VCO contains Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs). Unlike other types of fats, MCTs have a shorted chemical structure, which are rapidly converted to ketones at the liver. Ketones serve as an instant energy fuel to the body and brain, which enhance the brain function, increase metabolism, and support weight loss.

For centuries, coconut oil has been one of the best kept secrets of nature as it contains a perfect blend of essential vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates and MCFAs such as lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid. Lauric acid will be converted to monolaurin in the body, exerting anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal properties.

Researchers have suggested that ketones can provide an alternative energy source for malfunctioning brain cells to reduce symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease as their brain cells lack the ability to use glucose for energy.

Phosphatidylserine (PS), a “smart” nutrient for brain health

Phosphatidylserine (PS) is a building block compound that is used to form cell membranes throughout the body. PS is highly concentrated in the brain, in which it acts as a “gatekeeper” that regulates the entrance of oxygen as well as nutrient and removal of metabolic waste.

PS can be synthesized by the body, but it can also be obtained through food sources. PS in Opti-C is extracted from non-GMO soybean, a better and suitable alternative for people who would like to fire up the brainpower, sharpen the mental edge and help apply the brakes to cognitive decline.

Phosphatidylserine (PS) slows down age-related cognitive decline

One of the common neurodegenerative disorders faced by the elderly, the Alzheimer’s disease, is a condition where brain cells that process, store and retrieve information degenerate and die. Although the underlying cause is yet to be known, scientists have identified several possible culprits. One prime suspect is a brain protein fragment called beta-amyloid, a sticky compound that accumulates in the brain, disrupting communication between brain cells and activating immune cells, in which these immune cells trigger inflammation. Ultimately, the brain cells are destroyed.

Since PS helps prevent the accumulation of beta-amyloid in the brain, PS supplementation may help slow down the disease’s progression or even prevent it 8. In a study by Crook et al., 51 geriatric patients experienced significant improvement in cognitive test after taking 300mg PS daily for 12 weeks as compared to the placebo 9.

Phosphatidylserine (PS) boosts memory and cognitive function

After the age of 60, our body appear to make less acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is involved in recall ability and memory, which enables us to retrieve information from the brain’s memory bank, and maintain our ability to learn and process information on a cognitive level.

The good thing is serine portion of PS can be converted in the brain into choline, thus significantly improve acetylcholine synthesis, aiding memory and reversing age-related brain changes in recall ability and cognitive function. PS’s support for brain cell membrane function may further facilitate healthy neurotransmission.

PS beneficial effect is not limited to the elderly population, but also lead to improved cognitive performance and, possibly, academic achievements in young populations. In a study by Yong et al., a dose of 100 mg/day PS was demonstrated to improve cognitive performance in 120 students aged 17-18 who were randomized to receive either 250 ml milk supplemented with 100 mg PS or 250 ml un-supplemented milk (placebo) for 40 days 10.

Phosphatidylserine (PS) demonstrates ADHD benefits in children

ADHD probably include a number of factors, including genetic, prenatal, environmental, nutritional, social, and developmental. Dietary deficiencies in fatty acids and phospholipids during childhood may increase the risk of developing ADHD-type symptoms. Correcting underlying imbalances through PS supplementation may be an important strategy in cases where deficiency exists.

In a study by Hirayama et al., 36 children with ADHD, aged 4-14 years, who had not previously received any drug treatment related to ADHD, received placebo or 200 mg/day PS for 2 months. PS supplementation resulted in significant improvements in ADHD, AD, and HD, short-term auditory memory, as well as inattention and impulsivity 11. PS was well-tolerated and showed no adverse effects, indicating that it can be a natural nutritional strategy to improve mental performance in young children suffering from ADHD.

Unique Features of Opti-C
